What Does Job 3:23 Mean?
Job returns to his pressing question, now in a deeply personal form. Why is light, life itself, given to a man whose way is hidden, who cannot see the road ahead, and whom God has hedged in? The image of being hedged in is one of confinement, a person fenced on every side with no way forward and no way out.
Earlier in the book, a hedge around Job was a sign of God's protection. Now, in his anguish, the same hedge feels like a prison. Yet even when the way is hidden and the walls seem to close in, the God who set the hedge has not lost sight of His servant. The path that is hidden from Job is fully known to the Lord, and in Christ, who Himself walked a hidden and sorrowful road, we are assured that God hems us in not to trap us but to keep us.
