What Does Job 30:10 Mean?
Job describes the open contempt heaped on him. The same men loathe him, withdraw from him as from something unclean, yet come near enough to spit in his face, the deepest insult one could offer. His diseased, ruined state has made him an object of disgust to those beneath him.
Spitting in the face is the gesture of utter rejection, and to suffer it is to be counted as nothing. Job's words anticipate the One of whom it was written, "I hid not my face from shame and spitting," who endured the same in obedient love. The believer who has tasted humiliation finds a companion in that suffering Savior, and learns that the face spat upon by men can be the very face God lifts up and crowns with glory.
