What Does Job 31:4 Mean?
Job names the deepest reason for his careful living: God sees everything he does. Where his friends accuse him of hidden sin, Job appeals to the very One who would know if such sin existed — the God who counts every step he takes.
To know that God beholds all our ways can be either terror or comfort. For Job it becomes the foundation of integrity: he lives openly before God because there is nowhere to hide. For the believer, the same all-seeing gaze is finally the gaze of a Father who loses sight of none of His children, and before whom a clean conscience is the truest rest.
