What Does Job 36:8 Mean?
Elihu now turns to a hard case: what of the upright who are nonetheless caught in fetters and ropes of affliction? He does not pretend the godly are spared all suffering, but begins to explain what such binding can mean.
The image of chains and cords names the real experience of being trapped by pain or circumstance. Scripture does not flinch from this. The same God who permits the binding is the One who, in Christ, came to proclaim liberty to the captives and loose every cord that holds His people.
