What Does Job 37:22 Mean?
Elihu nears the close of his speech. He speaks of fair weather, a golden splendor, coming out of the north, and from this he turns to the source of all such glory: with God is terrible, awe-inspiring majesty. The brightness in the sky is only a faint echo of the splendor that surrounds the Lord Himself.
The movement of the verse leads the eye upward from creation to Creator. However glorious the cleared northern sky, it is nothing beside the majesty of God. That majesty is 'terrible' in the older sense, awesome and fear-stirring, the kind that makes a soul fall silent. The believer is meant to feel here a holy trembling that is also a deep delight, for the God of overwhelming majesty is the very God who has drawn near to save.
