What Does Job 37:23 Mean?
Elihu gathers his teaching into a great confession about God. The Almighty cannot be fully found out by human searching; He is supreme in power, in judgment, and in abundance of justice. And then a tender note: He will not afflict, He does not crush the innocent in wanton cruelty or pervert what is right.
Here power and goodness are held together. God's might is matched by His justice, and His justice is rich and full. For Job, who has feared that God afflicts without cause, this is balm: the Almighty whose ways we cannot trace is nonetheless perfectly just and will not wrong His own. The believer rests in this union of strength and righteousness. The God too great to be searched out is good beyond all our fears, and His justice can be trusted even where it cannot be understood.
