What Does Job 38:1 Mean?
For thirty-seven chapters Job and his friends have argued about suffering, justice, and the ways of God, and Job has longed for God to answer him directly. Now, at last, the LORD speaks. He comes not in a gentle whisper but out of the whirlwind, the storm that throughout Scripture signals the nearness of the holy God.
The silence is over, and that itself is mercy. God does not abandon the sufferer to his questions; he draws near and speaks. Yet he comes on his own terms, in power and majesty, reminding us that when the Lord answers, he answers as God and not as one summoned to a courtroom.
