What Does Job 38:3 Mean?
To gird up the loins meant to gather a long robe and tuck it into the belt so one could run, work, or stand firm. God calls Job to ready himself like a man facing a great task. Job had wanted to question God; now God will question Job.
There is dignity in this challenge. God does not dismiss Job or crush him; he treats him as one able to stand and listen. The summons to be strong is also an invitation to grow. When the Lord turns our questions back upon us, it is so that we might come to know him, and ourselves, more truly than our complaints allowed.
