What Does Job 4:6 Mean?
Eliphaz presses his point with a question. Should not Job's fear of God, his upright life, be the very foundation of his hope and confidence now? On its surface this seems an appeal to faith: trust the God you have served. Beneath it, however, lies the assumption that will drive the friends throughout the book, that a truly upright man would not be suffering like this.
The fear of God is indeed meant to anchor the soul, and reverence for the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Yet Eliphaz subtly ties that confidence to visible reward, as though devotion guarantees a sheltered life.
