What Does Job 5:20 Mean?
Eliphaz begins to list the specific troubles from which God delivers. In famine He redeems from death, and in war He saves from the power of the sword. The two great terrors of the ancient world, starvation and battle, are named first.
The word 'redeem' is rich, picturing God paying the price to buy back His own from death's grip. Such deliverance points beyond physical rescue to the deeper redemption that runs through all of Scripture. The God who guards His people through famine and sword is the same God who, in Christ, ransomed them from death itself, the last and greatest enemy.
