What Does Job 9:4 Mean?
Job names two of God's attributes that make the contest hopeless: perfect wisdom and unmatched might. Against an opponent who is both all-wise and all-strong, hardening oneself in defiance is folly. History offers no example of anyone who stiffened his neck against God and truly prospered.
Yet there is comfort hidden in this awe. The God we cannot overpower is the God who holds all things, and His strength is not arbitrary but joined to wisdom. To stop hardening ourselves and instead yield to such a One is not defeat but homecoming. The wise heart that we cannot resist is also the wise heart that loves us.
