John starts his book in a surprising place — not with a baby in Bethlehem, but at the very beginning of everything.
Today's Story
Most stories about Jesus start with His birth. But John starts his all the way back at the beginning of everything.
“In the beginning was the Word,” John wrote. “The Word was with God, and the Word was God. Through Him, everything was made. Nothing was made without Him.”
Who is “the Word”? It's Jesus! Before Jesus was ever a baby, He was with God in the beginning, helping make the whole world — every star, every tree, every person.
“In Him was life,” John wrote, “and that life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has never put it out.”
And then John wrote the most amazing part: “The Word became a human being and made His home with us.” The One who made everything became a real person — with skin and a smile and a voice — and came to live right here with us, full of grace and truth.
A man named John the Baptist came to point everyone to this Light. “Look!” he said. “Here is the One you've been waiting for!”
A Big Word

Talk About It
- John says Jesus was there “in the beginning,” making everything. What's something Jesus made that you love?
- Jesus is called “the Light” that the darkness can't put out. How is Jesus like a light for us?
- “The Word became a human being” means Jesus came to live right here with us. Why do you think He wanted to be that close?
