What Does John 10:7 Mean?
Seeing that the figure was missed, Jesus begins again with the same solemn formula and interprets his own parable. Of all the images in the fold scene, he reaches first not for the shepherd but for the door — the single gate by which the sheep go in and out. It is one of the great "I am" sayings that run through John's Gospel.
A door is a claim of exclusivity and of welcome at once. There is one way into the fold of God, and it is not a code or a ladder but a person. Whoever seeks entrance — to safety, to the flock, to the Father — is not sent off to find some other route; the way stands open, and it is Christ.
