John 11 for Kids

For Kids · 5 min with a grown-up

Jesus' friend Lazarus dies, and everyone is crying. But Jesus is about to show that He is stronger than death itself.

Today's Story

Jesus had three dear friends: Mary, Martha, and their brother Lazarus. One day Lazarus got very sick. His sisters sent for Jesus: “Lord, the one You love is sick.”

But by the time Jesus came, Lazarus had already died. Mary and Martha were so sad. “Lord,” Martha said, “if You had been here, my brother wouldn't have died.”

Jesus said something amazing: “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even if they die.”

Then Jesus saw everyone crying, and His own heart filled with sorrow.

Jesus wept.

John 11:35

Jesus loved Lazarus too. But He wasn't finished. He went to the tomb — a cave with a big stone over the front. “Roll the stone away,” Jesus said.

Then Jesus prayed, and called out in a loud voice: “Lazarus, come out!”

And out walked Lazarus — alive! Still wrapped in his grave cloths, blinking in the sunlight. Everyone gasped. Jesus had called him right back from death.

Jesus is stronger than sickness. Stronger than sadness. Even stronger than death.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. “Jesus wept” — He cried even though He knew He'd raise Lazarus. What does it tell you that Jesus cries with us when we're sad?
  2. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life.” How does it help to know Jesus is stronger than death?
  3. Martha was sad, but she still trusted Jesus. When you're sad, how can you still trust Him?
