What Does John 12:23 Mean?
Throughout this Gospel Jesus has said that his hour had not yet come. Now, with the nations at the door asking for him, the waiting ends. The hour he names is the cross, with the resurrection and exaltation shining beyond it.
He calls that hour glorification. The world saw an execution coming; Jesus saw glory, because in laying down his life he would reveal the heart of God and gather a harvest from all peoples. Glory, in his kingdom, wears the form of self-giving love. When the Greeks sought him, he answered with the cross, for that is where all the world may truly see Jesus.
