And I will pray the Father. Jesus positions himself as our advocate, our intercessor. He does not leave the disciples as orphans, abandoned when he departs. Instead, he goes to the Father on their behalf, asking for a gift that will sustain them. Another Comforter. The Greek word is parakletos, one who comes alongside. It could mean counselor, advocate, helper, or comforter. In every case, the sense is of presence and aid at the moment of need. Jesus himself has been their parakletos for three years, walking with them, teaching them, correcting them, encouraging them. Now he promises another who is like him, who will continue that work in a new mode.

That he may abide with you for ever. Forever. Not for a season or a generation but eternally, for all who come to faith. This is the gift that transforms the disciples' grief into hope. They are losing Jesus visibly but gaining a presence that will never leave. The Spirit will indwell them, guide them, teach them, convict them, transform them. In our own time, two thousand years later, this promise extends to us. We are not abandoned. The same Comforter who strengthened the early church strengthens us. His presence is immediate, intimate, permanent. We have access to counsel in confusion, comfort in suffering, power for witness. The promise is not one for the future but for today.
