Continuing His words of comfort on the night before His crucifixion, Jesus reassures His disciples that His departure is not loss but preparation -- He goes ahead to ready a place for them in His Father's house.
What Does John 14:2 Mean?
Jesus is assuring His disciples that in His Father's house there is ample room for them, and that He himself is going ahead to prepare their place. He has just told them not to let their hearts be troubled, and now He gives a concrete reason for hope. The image of the "Father's house" with "many mansions" speaks of a spacious, welcoming home where there is more than enough room for all who belong to Him. No follower need fear being left out for lack of space.
The phrase "if it were not so, I would have told you" is a striking note of personal honesty. Jesus stakes His own truthfulness on this promise; He would not have raised their hopes with something false. Then comes the heart of the verse: "I go to prepare a place for you." His departure, which so troubled them, is not abandonment but preparation. He leaves precisely in order to ready a place for those He loves. The old word "mansions" translates a term meaning dwelling places or abiding rooms -- places to remain permanently. This is no temporary lodging but a lasting home. For weary travelers in this life, the promise stands firm: the One who loves us has gone ahead to make ready a place where we may dwell with Him forever.
In the Original Language
The Greek "monai" (μοναί), from "meno" (to abide), means dwelling places or abiding rooms -- permanent homes, not temporary lodgings; "hetoimasai" (ἑτοιμάσαι) means to prepare or make ready.
