John 14:23 Meaning and Explanation

If a man love me, he will keep my words. Love produces obedience. There is no separation. To love Jesus is not to have warm feelings about him while ignoring his teaching. It is to take his words seriously, to wrestle with them, to align life with them. This keeping is not mechanical compliance but attentive listening. A person who loves another listens to their words, seeks to understand them, acts on them. And my Father will love him. The Father's love is not earned but is the response to the person who loves the Son. It is a kind of overflow. The person who loves Christ finds themselves also loved by the Father.

We will come unto him, and make our abode with him. The plural 'we' is significant. The Father and the Son come together to make their home in the believer. This is the fullest revelation of the Christian mystery: that God comes to dwell with us, not in a distant heaven but in the intimate space of our hearts. We become temples of the Holy Spirit, the sanctuary of God's presence. This is not a onetime event but an ongoing reality. They will abide, remain, make their home. The presence is permanent, though its intensity and clarity may vary. The believer is no longer a servant standing at a distance but a beloved friend in whose home the Father and Son have taken up residence. This is the basis for everything else: prayer, obedience, courage, transformation. We do not walk alone.
