Context
Whether from gratitude, fear of further questioning, or confusion, the man reveals Jesus' identity.
What Does John 5:15 Mean?
The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole. A kind of betrayal, perhaps unintended. The man has moved from 'I don't know who he is' to 'It was Jesus.' We are not told his motivation. Perhaps he was pressed in questioning and broke under pressure. Perhaps he wanted to give public credit to the one who healed him. Perhaps he did not yet understand that by naming Jesus, he was handing the authorities a target.
What is clear: his testimony, though true, sets in motion the persecution of Jesus. Truth, spoken innocently, can become a weapon in the hands of those who do not wish to understand.
Application
When we speak our truth, we may unleash consequences we did not foresee. We speak truly anyway, and trust God with the results.
