John 19 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

This is the holy, hard day told again — and John shows us Jesus loving people even with His very last breath.

Today's Story

Jesus had done nothing wrong, but He was sentenced to die on a cross. He carried it to a hill, and there He was crucified.

Even on the cross, Jesus was thinking of others. He saw His mother, Mary, standing nearby, crying. And He saw His good friend John close by. “Take care of each other,” Jesus told them. “She is your mother now; he is your son.” And from that day on, John took Mary into his own home. Even in His pain, Jesus made sure His mother would be loved.

The hours passed. Jesus knew He had done everything God had sent Him to do. With His last breath, He said three powerful words: “It is finished.” It didn't mean “I'm finished” — it meant the work of saving us was complete. Done. All out of love.

Then He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

A kind man named Joseph, with his friend Nicodemus, gently took Jesus' body and laid it carefully in a brand-new tomb in a quiet garden, wrapping it with sweet-smelling spices.

It was finished — the hardest thing, done out of the greatest love. But Sunday was coming.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. Even on the cross, Jesus made sure His mother would be cared for. What does that show you about Jesus' heart?
  2. “It is finished” meant Jesus had done everything He came to do. How does it feel to know He finished it all out of love for you?
  3. This was the hardest day, but it wasn't the end. Do you know what comes next?
