Jesus announces a coming hour when worship of the Father will be bound neither to Gerizim nor to Jerusalem.

What Does John 4:21 Mean?

Woman, believe me is solemn and kind — the same respectful address he uses for his own mother (2:4; 19:26). He does not referee the old quarrel. He announces an hour — a word that gathers in this Gospel around his death and glorification — that will change the question itself.

Ye shall worship the Father: he promises Samaritans a place among true worshipers. The center of worship is about to shift from sacred geography to a living relationship with the Father himself. Jesus has already pointed to the temple of his own body (2:19-21). When his hour comes, access to God will not run through one summit or one city, and no map will be able to keep anyone far from the Father.
