What Does John 8:15 Mean?
Jesus names the root of their blindness: they judge after the flesh — by surface and appearance. A Galilean accent, a carpenter's trade, a teacher without credentials: measured that way, his claims look absurd to them. He, by contrast, judges no man; condemnation is not the errand he came on.
The contrast is between shallow verdicts and a Savior's restraint. The only one who could judge perfectly came first to save (John 3:17; 12:47); the judgment that belongs to him waits for its appointed day. His words warn us off our quick appraisals by status and surface (John 7:24), and his restraint is the sinner's reprieve — the space before judgment is the space given for mercy.
