What Does John 8:29 Mean?
Amid the rising hostility Jesus states the secret of his steadiness: he is not alone. The Father who commissioned him accompanies him — sending and presence belong together — and the fellowship is unclouded because the obedience is unbroken: I do always those things that please him.
No one else could say that sentence whole; it belongs to the sinless Son, and it carried him through desertion by crowds and friends, all the way to the cross. Yet it also maps the path of a disciple's peace: companionship with God deepens along the road of pleasing him (John 14:23). And because Christ pleased the Father on our behalf, those who belong to him hear his own promise — I will not leave you comfortless (John 14:18).
