Jonah recalls being cast into the depths, surrounded by floods, with God's waves sweeping over him.

What Does Jonah 2:3 Mean?

Jonah describes his sinking in vivid waves of language. He was cast into the deep, into the heart of the seas, with floods surrounding him and billows and waves passing over him. Strikingly, he says it was God who cast him there: thy billows and thy waves. Though the sailors threw him in, Jonah sees the hand of God behind it all.

This is a hard-won and healthy faith, recognizing God's sovereignty even in suffering rather than blaming only the people or forces nearby. The waves that nearly destroyed him were not outside God's reach but somehow within His purpose. To say all thy waves passed over me is to surrender even one's drowning to God. The same words are echoed in the Psalms by those who feel overwhelmed yet still cling to the Lord. When the floods of life rise over us, we are not abandoned; the God who permits the deep is the God who can also bring us up from it.
