Jonah pictures the waters closing over his very life, the deep surrounding him, seaweed wound about his head.

What Does Jonah 2:5 Mean?

Jonah returns to the terror of his drowning with unforgettable images. The waters closed in even to the soul, that is, to the point of taking his life; the deep wrapped around him; and seaweed twisted about his head as he sank. We can feel the cold, the dark, the tightening grip of the sea. He has come, by his own account, to the very edge of death.

It is honest to name how near the end we have come, and Jonah does not minimize it. Yet by setting this memory inside a prayer of thanksgiving, he shows that he is speaking from the far side of rescue. The God who let him sink to the soul did not let him stay there. There are seasons when life seems to wrap around us like those weeds, dragging us down. Even then, the testimony of Jonah stands: the depths are not beyond the God who saves, and what feels like a grave can become the place where He meets us.
