What Does Joshua 20:8 Mean?
East of the Jordan, where Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh had settled, three more cities are named -- Bezer on the plain, Ramoth in Gilead, and Golan in Bashan. Again they stretch from south to north, mirroring the three cities to the west.
Six cities in all, balanced on both sides of the river, embrace the whole nation. None of God's people, on either bank, is left without provision. The symmetry preaches a quiet sermon: mercy is evenly poured out, withheld from no tribe and no region. The God of Israel makes His refuge available to all His people alike, leaving none beyond the reach of safety.
