At last Achan speaks the truth: 'Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel.' He names his act as sin and against whom it was committed, then prepares to lay out the details. The long concealment ends in open admission.
His confession, though it comes only when he is cornered, is still genuine in its words. He does not excuse or shift the blame; he owns the sin as his own and as an offense against God first of all. That recognition, that sin is finally against the LORD, is the beginning of all true repentance.
