Judges 1:5 Meaning and Explanation

The narrative narrows from the wider battle to a single foe. Adonibezek, whose name means lord of Bezek, is found in his own city, and Judah engages him directly. The Canaanites and Perizzites under his command are struck down, and the local king is left exposed.

Scripture often moves from the general to the particular to show that no power stands outside God's reckoning. A king who ruled over many is met and overcome. The verse prepares the reader for what follows, where this same ruler will confess that the justice he meets is the very measure he once dealt to others. Even in the press of battle, a moral order is at work that no throne can escape.
