Judges 20:25 Meaning and Explanation

A second blow falls. Benjamin once more sallies from Gibeah and cuts down eighteen thousand Israelites. Two days, two devastating defeats; forty thousand men now lie dead. Israel had sought the LORD and obeyed his command to go up, yet again they are routed. The repetition of 'destroyed down to the ground' presses home the depth of their loss and bewilderment.

This second defeat is meant to perplex us, as it surely perplexed Israel. They had done what God said, and still they fell. The Scriptures do not promise that obedience spares us from suffering or that God's purposes unfold on our timetable. Sometimes he leads his people through repeated trial to teach them what cannot be learned otherwise, to break false confidence and deepen genuine dependence. The verse calls us to trust God even when obedience leads through sorrow we cannot yet understand.
