Judges 8:31 Meaning and Explanation

A further note names another son: a concubine living in Shechem bears Gideon a boy whom he names Abimelech. The child is set apart from the seventy by his mother's standing and his city.

The name Abimelech means my father is king, an irony beside the father who refused to be king. This son, born of Shechem, will rise in the next chapter to seize by violence the very throne Gideon declined, turning against his own brothers. The verse plants a quiet warning: the seeds of a house's ruin can be sown in its own arrangements, and ambition often grows where godly order has been set aside.
