Jotham offers the first half of a solemn either-or. If, in fact, they have acted with truth and sincerity toward Gideon and his house, then let them rejoice in Abimelech, and let him rejoice in them.
The words drip with irony, for both speaker and hearers know the condition is false. By granting the impossible 'if,' Jotham lets the people convict themselves.
