What Does Judges 9:29 Mean?
Gaal's words swell into a boast: if only this people were under his command, he would get rid of Abimelech. Then, as if calling out an absent rival, he taunts the king to enlarge his army and come out to battle.
The boast is large but the man is empty -- bold talk made over wine before any sword is drawn. Pride loves to declare what it will do before the testing comes. Gaal speaks as though victory were already his, but the coming verses will show how quickly such bravado collapses. Scripture often sets the loud confidence of the proud beside the silence of their fall.
