What Does Judges 9:39 Mean?
Shamed into action, Gaal goes out at the head of the men of Shechem and engages Abimelech in battle. The confrontation he provoked is now joined.
Forced to back his words with deeds, Gaal leads others into a fight born of his own pride. The whole city is dragged into the consequences of one man's boasting and another's treachery. So the violence widens, exactly along the lines Jotham drew. When leaders contend for power out of pride, it is the people who march out to bleed for it.
