What Does Judges 9:41 Mean?
After the battle Abimelech settles at Arumah, and Zebul, having served his master's cause, drives Gaal and his kinsmen out so they can no longer live in Shechem.
Gaal vanishes from the story as quickly as he entered, his rebellion crushed and himself banished. But the removal of Gaal does not bring peace; the deeper quarrel between Abimelech and the city remains. The rival is gone, yet the judgment is not finished. Abimelech's wrath against Shechem itself is only gathering, and the worst of the prophecy is still to come.
