What Does Judges 9:46 Mean?
Hearing of the city's fall, the men of the tower of Shechem flee into a stronghold within the temple of their god Berith, hoping its walls and their idol will protect them.
They run for safety to the very house of the false god that started this ruin, the same Baal-berith whose silver first hired Abimelech. But an idol cannot shelter those who trust it. Refuge sought in false worship is no refuge at all. The place they choose for safety will become the place of their death, for the bramble's shadow gives no protection when the fire finally comes.
