What Does Judges 9:54 Mean?
Fatally struck, Abimelech hurriedly calls his armorbearer and orders him to draw his sword and kill him, so that it would never be said that a woman killed him. The young man runs him through, and Abimelech dies.
Even at the threshold of death his thought is for his pride, desperate that history not record his shame. Yet the very plea preserves the shame forever in Scripture's pages. The man who lived by violence dies by it, by his own command. His end testifies that the proud cannot outrun the judgment of God or rewrite the truth of how they fell. The fire from Shechem has, as foretold, devoured Abimelech.
