1 Samuel 14 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

Saul's son Jonathan believes something amazing: that God doesn't need a big army to win. He's about to prove it with just one helper.

Today's Story

The enemy army was camped on top of a steep, rocky cliff. Saul's soldiers were down below, and there were so few of them. It looked hopeless.

But Jonathan, Saul's son, had an idea. He turned to the young man who carried his armor and said something brave: “Nothing can stop the LORD from saving. It doesn't matter whether he uses many people or just a few.”

So the two of them - just two! - started climbing. Up the cliff, hands and feet on the rocks, all the way to the top, straight toward the enemy camp.

And God fought for them. The enemy soldiers panicked and scattered. The ground even shook! Two young men who trusted God had turned the whole battle around.

When Saul and the rest of the army saw it, they jumped up and joined the chase. That day God rescued Israel - all because Jonathan believed God didn't need a big crowd to do a big thing.

A Big Word

  2. Why do you think Jonathan wasn't scared of the huge army on the cliff?
  3. God can do big things with just a few people. What is one small thing you could do for God this week?
