2 Samuel 17 for Kids

For Kids · 3 min with a grown-up

David is out in the wilderness, far from home and in danger. But God is quietly looking after him in ways David can't even see.

Today's Story

While David was away from his city, the people who had turned against him were making plans to catch him. It looked dangerous.

But God was watching over David. Quietly, behind the scenes, God made sure the harmful plan against David simply didn't work. And brave friends sent David a secret warning: “Hurry — cross the river tonight, where you'll be safe!” So David and all his people crossed safely in the dark.

Then something kind happened. When David reached the other side, tired and hungry, people came out to help him. They brought beds to sleep on, bowls and pots, wheat and barley, bread and honey, cheese and other good things to eat.

“You must be hungry and tired and thirsty from the desert,” they said. And they took care of David and everyone with him.

David didn't rescue himself. God did — partly by stopping a bad plan, and partly by sending kind helpers with armfuls of food. God's care can come in big quiet ways and in simple, lovely ways like a warm meal.

A Big Word

Talk About It

  1. God took care of David in ways David couldn't see. When has God taken care of you in a surprising way?
  2. Kind people brought David food when he was hungry and tired. Who is someone who could use a little kindness from you this week?
  3. God used ordinary helpers with bread and honey. How could God use you to help someone?
