Exodus 14 for Kids

For Kids · 5 min with a grown-up

God's people are free — but Pharaoh changes his mind and comes chasing after them. Now they're stuck between a huge army and a huge sea. There's no way out. Except God.

Today's Story

Pharaoh changed his mind one last time. “We let our slaves go!” he roared. He grabbed his army and his fastest chariots and went thundering after God's people.

God's people were camped by a big sea when they saw the dust of the army coming. They were trapped — water in front, an army behind. They were so afraid! “Did you bring us out here to be done in?” they cried.

But Moses said, “Don't be afraid. Stand still and watch the Lord save you. The Lord will fight for you. Just be still.”

Then God told Moses to stretch his staff out over the water. All night long, God sent a strong wind. And the sea split right down the middle — a tall wall of water on the right, a tall wall of water on the left, and a wide, dry path straight through the middle!

God's people walked across on dry ground, the water standing up like glass on both sides. Every last one of them made it safely to the other shore.

The army charged in after them — but God tangled up their wheels. And the moment His people were safely across, the walls of water rushed back together, and the army could not follow. God's people were safe. They were free. And they were on the far side of the sea, staring at the most amazing thing they had ever seen.

Talk About It

  1. God's people were stuck with water in front and an army behind — no way out that they could see. When have you felt stuck, like there was no good way out?
  2. Moses said, “Just be still.” That's hard when you're scared! What helps you be still and trust God when you're afraid?
  3. God made a dry road right through the middle of the sea. What's a surprising way God has helped you or your family?
