God leads His people to a great mountain — and then God Himself comes down to meet them, in thunder and smoke and the blast of a trumpet.
Today's Story
Three months out of Egypt, God's people came to a huge mountain called Sinai, and they set up camp at the foot of it.
God called Moses up the mountain and gave him a message for the people: “You've seen how I carried you out of Egypt — like a great eagle carries its little ones on its wings. If you'll listen to Me and walk in My ways, you will be My treasure, a special people who belong close to Me.”
Moses told the people, and they all said together, “We will do everything the Lord says!”
Then God said, “Get ready. In three days I am going to come down where you can see.”
On the third morning — BOOM! Thunder rolled. Lightning flashed. A thick cloud covered the top of the mountain, and a trumpet blast grew louder and louder until everyone trembled with wonder. Smoke poured up to the sky, because God had come down in fire, and the whole mountain shook.
The God who made the stars and split the sea had come down close enough to speak with His people. Holy. Mighty. And near.
A Big Word
Memory Verse
Talk About It
- God called His people His “treasure.” How does it feel to know that the God who made everything calls YOU His treasure?
- God said He carried them like an eagle carries its babies on its wings. When has God carried you through something hard?
- The mountain shook with thunder and fire because God is so great and holy. What's something about God that fills you with wonder?
