Genesis 19 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

Two angels come to rescue Lot's family from a city that has turned its back on God. But they must obey one important rule: don't look back.

Today's Story

Abraham's nephew Lot lived in a city called Sodom. The land around it was beautiful, but the people in the city had become very wicked. They didn't obey God, and they were cruel and selfish.

God decided the time had come to put an end to all that wickedness. But God is full of mercy — so first He sent two angels to rescue the people who still loved Him. (Abraham had even prayed for the city, asking God to spare it if good people could be found there. God always listens, and God remembered Lot.)

The two angels came to Lot's house in the evening. “Hurry!” they told Lot. “Gather your family. God is going to destroy this city, and we've come to get you out safely.”

At dawn, the angels took Lot, his wife, and his two daughters by the hand and rushed them out of the city to safety. They gave one strict instruction: “Run for your lives! Don't stop. And whatever you do — don't look back!”

So they ran. And as they ran, God sent burning fire down from the sky, and the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were completely destroyed.

Lot and his daughters obeyed and kept running, eyes forward, all the way to safety. But Lot's wife just couldn't help herself. She stopped and looked back at the city behind her — and the moment she disobeyed, she turned into a pillar of salt, right where she stood.

God had rescued the ones who trusted Him. He always does.

Talk About It

  1. The angels said “don't look back,” but Lot's wife did. Why do you think it's important to follow good directions the first time, right away?
  2. God rescued Lot's family because they loved Him. How does it feel to know God looks out for the people who love Him?
  3. The people of Sodom ignored God and were unkind and selfish. What are some ways we can love God and love others instead?
