Genesis 40 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

Still stuck in prison, Joseph meets two men with troubling dreams — and God uses Joseph to help them, even in the middle of his own hard time.

Today's Story

Joseph was still in prison, even though he had done nothing wrong. Two new prisoners arrived — the king's cupbearer (who used to bring the king his drinks) and the king's baker. They had both made the king angry.

One morning, Joseph noticed they both looked sad and worried. “What's wrong?” he asked kindly. Even in his own hard time, Joseph cared about others.

“We each had a strange dream,” they said, “and there's no one here to tell us what they mean.” Joseph said, “The meaning of dreams belongs to God. Tell me your dreams.”

The cupbearer's dream meant good news: in three days the king would forgive him and give him his old job back. (The baker's dream, sadly, meant bad news.) And in three days, just as Joseph said, the dreams came true.

Joseph had one favor to ask the cupbearer: “When you're back with the king, please remember me. Tell him I'm here unfairly.” The cupbearer said yes… but once he was free and happy again, he completely forgot about Joseph.

Poor Joseph waited and waited. It seemed like everyone had forgotten him. But God had not forgotten. God was getting everything ready, in His own perfect time.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. Even in his own hard time, Joseph noticed the two men were sad and helped them. How can we care about others even when we're going through something hard?
  2. The cupbearer forgot all about Joseph. Have you ever felt forgotten? God never forgets you.
  3. Joseph gave God the credit for understanding the dreams. When we do something well, how can we remember to give God the credit?
