God gave Isaiah some night-time messages - and a picture of a faithful watchman who waits in the dark for the morning to come.
Today's Story
In Isaiah's day, every city had a watchman. He climbed up high on the wall at night and kept his eyes open in the dark, watching for anything coming. When he saw something, he called out so everyone would know.
God told Isaiah, “Go, post a watchman. Have him tell what he sees.” So the watchman stood at his post, looking and listening all through the long, dark night.
God showed Isaiah that a proud, powerful city called Babylon - a city that had been unkind and would not listen to God - was not going to stay strong and proud forever. God was going to make wrong things right.
Then someone called out to the watchman from the dark. “Watchman, how much of the night is left? Is the morning almost here?”
And the watchman answered with hope: “Morning is coming.”
It was God's gentle promise. The dark night would not last forever. He sees everything, even in the dark, and the morning always comes.
A Big Word
Memory Verse
Talk About It
- Is the dark ever a little scary for you at night? How does it help to know God sees everything, even in the dark?
- The watchman waited a long time for morning. What is something you've had to wait a long time for?
- God promised “morning is coming” after the dark. Can you think of a sad or hard time that got better, like morning after a long night?
