James keeps writing his letter to God's family, helping them love God and love each other.
Today he talks about treating everyone — everyone! — with the same kindness.
Today's Story
In his letter, James asked God's family to picture something. “Imagine two people come to visit,” he wrote. “One wears shiny, fancy clothes. The other wears old, dusty clothes.”
“What if you gave the fancy one the best seat,” James asked, “but told the dusty one to sit on the floor? That isn't fair! God loves them both the same.”
James reminded them of God's big rule: Love your neighbor as much as you love yourself. Every neighbor. Not just the ones with nice things.
Then James said something important. “It is good to say you love God,” he wrote. “But love should show up in what you do, too.”
“If your friend is cold and hungry,” he said, “and you only say, ‘Stay warm! Have a good lunch!’ — but you don't give them a coat or any food — that doesn't help them at all.”
Real love does something. It shares the coat. It hands over the sandwich. When we believe in God, our kindness shows it — like a tree showing it is healthy by growing good fruit.
A Big Word
Memory Verse
Talk About It
- Was there someone today who looked left out or alone? What is one thing you could do for them tomorrow?
- Why do you think God wants us to treat the fancy person and the dusty person exactly the same?
- What is the difference between saying “I love you” and showing it? Can you name a way to show it?
