Jeremiah 19 for Kids

For Kids · 3 min with a grown-up

Yesterday Jeremiah watched a potter shape soft clay. Today God gives him a jar that is already finished and hard — to teach the people one more loving lesson.

Today's Story

God told Jeremiah, “Go buy a clay jar from the potter. Then take some of the leaders with you, and walk out to the edge of the city.”

So Jeremiah did. He held up the hard clay jar where everyone could see it. And he gave them a loving warning from God.

“You have been making sad, unkind choices,” he said. “You have walked away from God. And those choices can break things — just like this.”

Then Jeremiah dropped the jar. Crash! It shattered into little pieces all over the ground.

Everyone went quiet. You can squish soft clay and shape it again — but a hard jar, once it's broken, can't be put back together.

Jeremiah wasn't being mean. He was warning the people because God loved them. It was like a grown-up calling out “Careful!” before you trip. God was saying, “Please come back to Me now — before anything breaks.”

A Big Word

Talk About It

  1. Soft clay can be re-shaped, but a broken jar can't be glued back. Can you think of something that's easy to break but hard to fix?
  2. Jeremiah warned the people because God loved them. When a grown-up warns you to be careful, how is that a kind of love?
  3. What is a warning your family has given you that turned out to keep you safe?
