God taught Jeremiah a lesson using something simple from the kitchen — two baskets of figs.
Today's Story
One day God showed Jeremiah a picture to help him understand something. It was two baskets of figs. (Figs are a sweet, soft fruit, a little like a small fig cookie filling.)
One basket was full of good figs — ripe and yummy, the best you could find. The other basket was full of spoiled figs — so mushy and old that no one would want to eat them.
God said, “The good figs are like the people who had to leave their homes and go to a faraway land. Even though they are far away, their hearts still belong to Me. So I am watching over them. I will bring them back home one day. And I will give them a heart that truly knows Me and wants to follow Me.”
The spoiled figs were like the people who had turned away from God and didn't want to listen to Him at all.
The good news is that God is so kind. He keeps His eye on His people, even when they are far from home. And He loves to give people a soft heart that wants to know Him.
A Big Word
Memory Verse
Talk About It
- God promised to watch over His people even when they were far from home. Have you ever been away from home? How does it feel to know God is with you everywhere you go?
- God said He gives people “a heart to know Me.” What do you think it means to really know God, not just know about Him?
- The good figs were the ones whose hearts stayed close to God. What is one way you can keep your heart close to God this week?
