Jeremiah 36 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

Jeremiah was a messenger for God. In this chapter, God tells him to write everything down — and the king tries to make the words disappear.

Today's Story

God said to Jeremiah, “Get a scroll. Write down every word I have given you. Maybe when the people hear it, they will turn back to Me.”

So Jeremiah called his friend Baruch. Jeremiah said the words out loud, and Baruch wrote them all down on a long scroll. It took a long time.

Then Baruch took the scroll to God's house and read it out loud so everyone could hear. The leaders listened. Their eyes got wide. “The king needs to hear this,” they said. But they were a little scared, so they told Baruch and Jeremiah, “Go hide.”

The scroll was carried to the king. He was sitting by a warm fire because it was winter. A man began to read the scroll out loud.

But the king did not like the words. So every time the man read a little bit, the king took a knife, cut that piece off, and tossed it into the fire. Piece by piece, the whole scroll burned up.

Did that stop God's words? No. God said to Jeremiah, “Get another scroll. Write it all down again.” So Jeremiah and Baruch wrote every single word a second time — and even added more.

A Big Word

Talk About It

  1. The king put his fingers in his ears, in a way, because he did not like what he heard. When is it hard for you to listen to something you don't want to hear?
  2. The king burned the scroll, but God just had it written again. What does that tell you about how strong God's words are?
  3. Baruch was brave to read God's words out loud, even when it was a little scary. When could you be brave for God this week?
