For Kids · 3 min with a grown-up
God asked Jeremiah to set up a little test — not to be mean, but to show everyone a family that was very good at listening.
Today's Story
There was a family called the Rekabites. A long time ago, their grandfather had asked them to do something. He said, “In our family, we do not drink wine. We live a simple life and trust God.”
Year after year, the children grew up. Then their children grew up too. And the whole family kept right on obeying their grandfather, all that time.
One day God told Jeremiah, “Bring the Rekabite family into My house, and set cups of wine in front of them.”
So Jeremiah did. He filled the cups and said, “Here, have a drink!”
But the whole family said, “No, thank you. Our grandfather asked us not to, and we still listen to him.” Even with the cups right there, they did not change their minds.
God smiled at that. He said to everyone, “Look at this family! Their grandfather asked them once, and they have listened for years and years. I have asked My people again and again — I just want them to listen to Me like that.”
God loved that the Rekabites kept their word. And He told them, “Because you listened so well, your family will always be close to Me.”
A Big Word
Memory Verse
Talk About It
- The Rekabites said “no, thank you” even when the cups were right in front of them. When is it hard for you to do the right thing when something tempting is right there?
- This family listened for years and years. Who is someone in your family who has taught you something good that you want to keep doing?
- God just wanted His people to listen to Him. What is one thing you think God is asking you to do this week?
