Jeremiah 38 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

Jeremiah keeps telling the truth, and it lands him in a hard spot — until one brave, kind helper steps up.

Today's Story

Some of the leaders were tired of Jeremiah telling the truth. So they came up with an unkind plan. They lowered Jeremiah down into a deep, empty well with ropes.

There was no water at the bottom — just thick, sticky mud. Down, down Jeremiah went, until his feet sank in the mud and he could not climb out. It was dark and quiet and lonely down there.

But God saw Jeremiah. And there was a man named Ebed-Melech who worked at the palace. When he heard what had happened, his heart hurt for Jeremiah. He hurried straight to the king.

“This is not right!” he said. “Jeremiah will not last down in that well. Please let me help him.” And the king said yes.

So Ebed-Melech grabbed some ropes and some soft old rags. He found a few helpers and ran to the well. He called down, “Put these rags under your arms so the ropes won't hurt you. Then hold on!”

Jeremiah tucked the rags in place. The men pulled and pulled. Up, up, up — until Jeremiah was out of the mud and safe in the sunshine again. One kind, brave person had rescued him.

Talk About It

  1. Jeremiah felt stuck and alone in the well. Have you ever felt stuck, like a hard feeling you couldn't get out of by yourself?
  2. Ebed-Melech saw a problem and did something brave to help. Who is a helper you can run to when you need one?
  3. It only took one kind person to rescue Jeremiah. How could you be that one kind helper for someone this week?
