For years Jeremiah warned the people to come back to God. This is the chapter where the sad day finally came — and where God kept two special promises.
Today's Story
For a very long time, Jeremiah had been telling the people, “Please come back to God.” He told them gently, again and again, because he loved them. But the people would not listen.
And so a sad day came. A great army from far away came and took over the city of Jerusalem. It was the very thing Jeremiah had warned about for years. Many people had to leave their homes.
But even on that sad day, God did not forget Jeremiah. The leader of the army gave special orders: “Find Jeremiah. Take good care of him. Do not let anyone hurt him.” So the soldiers found Jeremiah, set him free, and treated him kindly. God had promised to keep him safe — and He did.
God remembered someone else too: Ebed-Melech, the kind man who had pulled Jeremiah out of the muddy well. God sent Jeremiah with a message just for him: “Because you trusted Me, I will keep you safe. You will be okay.”
Even on the hardest day, God kept every promise He made.
A Big Word

Talk About It
- God kept His promise to Ebed-Melech because he trusted God. When is it easy for you to trust, and when is it hard?
- It was a very sad day, but God was still taking care of His people. Have you ever had a hard day where you could still see God being good to you?
- God remembered the kind thing Ebed-Melech did. What kind thing could you do today that would make God smile?
